Two great men of India

Close to the demise of W. C. Banerjee, who worked with a deep passion for the welfare and development of India, two other great men have also passed away recently. Mr. Justice Badruddin Tyabji, who held an esteemed position not only among the Mohammedans of Bombay, but among many of the natives of India, and Babu Ananda Mohan Bose of Calcutta, who was equally famous, passed away.

Mr. Tyabji was the first of the Mohammedans of Bombay who was fortunate enough to acquire an English education and to rise to a high position in his profession. He was born in 1844 into a prominent Arab family of Bombay. He was born into this noble family that came to Cambay in Gujarat three centuries ago and moved to Mumbai later.

As his father was a very wealthy merchant, who understood the worth of western education, he enrolled his sons to study English, which many in his religion resented. Mr. Tyabji first studied at Elphinstone College, Bombay. His education there was discontinued due to his eye problems, and he went to France for treatment. After that, he went to London for legal studies and returned to Bombay as a barrister. He won public accolades because of his intelligence and interest in public affairs. Along with Justices Mr. Telang and Mr. Pherozesha Mehta, he continued to participate in social service activities. He was very popular in the administration of the Indian National Congress. He also founded the Anjuman-i-Islam Society in Bombay. He was elected as a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly in 1882. He was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 1897. During his ten years’ tenure as a judge there, he served and received appreciation of the Hindus, Mohammedans, and some other castes. This noble man, despite his high position, lived a modest life, with no desire for luxuries and no desire for glory. His death is indeed a great loss to us.

Mr. Ananda Mohan Bose was a leader of the Hindus of Bengal. Mr. Bose, a true patriot, went to Cambridge and earned high distinction in the Mathematics examination, followed by a degree in law examination, and earned the title of Barrister-at-law before returning to India. He was keenly involved in the running of the Indian National Congress. Mr. Bose presided over the Congress meeting held at Madras in 1898. He was involved in the field of public affairs in Bengal and held an opposing opinion on the issue of the partition of Bengal. Mr. Bose had been ill for a long time. He was also one of the great people who worked for the welfare of Indians. His demise is also a great loss for India.
