The Madras newspapers, which we have just received, state that Mr. Tilak's sentence of six years of exile decided by the Bombay High Court is favourably reconsidered by the Government and that he is merely imprisoned for six years. There is no doubt that this news will inspire gratitude and general happiness among the people towards the Bombay Government. Mr. Tilak was sentenced to exile and a fine. We mentioned earlier that the fine has been cancelled. The government had stated that his sentence was commuted to mere imprisonment considering his old age and physical condition. Mr. Tilak has now been taken from Sabarmati jail to Burma. Although there is a report that he is to be kept away from India only for some time, we are glad that the Government has thus reduced the sentence, which is a very good policy, and a policy conducive to the greater reconciliation between the Government and the subjects.
