Prince of Wales and Muslims

The Prince of Wales, heir apparent to the throne of the British Empire, after visiting the state of Madras, travelled to Mysore, Hyderabad, Gwalior, Kashi and other places. He happily spent time hunting in some places and reached Aligarh on March 8. There, he visited the great educational institution, Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. Even though the visit to the college was planned to be without any pomp and fanfare, as reports indicate, the visit ultimately ended up like the finale of a festive procession.

The Collector, the Lieutenant Governor, Aga Khan and other dignitaries were present there to give a grand reception to the Prince and his wife. The guests visited many institutions attached to the college and enquired about their functioning amidst loud shouts of welcome by the students. It is needless to say that the Prince and those accompanying him were curious about the history of the college that was started for the upliftment of the six crore Muslims of India. The Prince decided to enquire into the working of the great Muslim educational institution and its history, halting at Aligarh, on his way to Quetta (text missing).

Due to lower status of the Muslim community in education, etc. and to find a solution to correct the situation, an educational institution was started in a small way. It is worth remembering now that such an institution became the Aligarh Anglo Oriental College, which, in the near future, is intended to become the Muslim University. This institution is a result of the earnest initiatives of the scholar, Sir Syed Ahmad, who was passionate about the progress of his community. He started the institution with the understanding that education along the lines of the old system that existed in the countries of the East, would not enable Muslims to gain a status at par with other communities. He believed that without learning modern sciences, they would not attain significant heights in the contemporary ways of the world. Towards this end, undeterred by the obstacles created by those who cling to traditions and those who deny other ways of reasoning and, by withstanding ridicule from many, he founded the institution with a few of his friends.

Since Aligarh is a central location for all Muslims, Sir Syed Ahmad decided to establish a small school which was the seed of his great expectations. The buildings which housed the army were lying vacant there and, in one of them, the school was started, wherein work towards the great institution of his imagination began. He dreamed that this college would evolve into a university which would impart ethical practises, magnanimity and liberal education. In the midst of many obstacles, a few great minds like Theodore Beck were willing to help him. In due course, the number of students increased and the institution lacked space to house them all. Financial help from common people enabled it to overcome this constraint and the great institution was thus established which now has reached a stage where his aspirations have been realised.

The institution has been organised along the lines of universities in England. Students stay in hostels within the college. There are people appointed for overseeing their needs. Arrangements have also been made for them to have different kinds of leisurely activities. Muslim students from different places like Shiraz, Tehran, Bushair, Peshawar, Quetta, Bengal, Bombay, northern India, Hyderabad, Mysore, Madras and Burma are studying here. Many of those who have studied and passed out of the college have reached high positions. Efforts are on to modernise the current state of the college.

Aga Khan and many other esteemed individuals have undertaken huge initiatives for transforming it into a university. “Our people need to create a capital for education and morality. We need a city that embodies the best of ideas and higher examples. What we need is a central place that can radiate the light of knowledge among the Muslims of India and outside.” Such a message to Muslims from Aga Khan speaks aloud of his interest in the establishment of the university. The Prince’s visit to such a Muslim college and his enquiries about it have undoubtedly enhanced the Muslim community’s devotion to the royal family.
