Our unemployed youth - 2

In the current state of the Nair community, the number of unemployed youth is increasing. It has been mentioned in the previous issue that due to their idle life, the financial power of the community is declining. One has to ponder over what has contributed to this deplorable state of affairs. According to Mr. Parameswaran Pillai, the main reasons are twofold: firstly, the ill-effects of the joint family system, that is, Marumakkathayam, and secondly, the shortcomings of the education system. Whatever glory the Tharavads may have because of the joint family wealth, it has been revealed that their members face many evils due to a lack of sense of responsibility and the lack of business opportunities. Unlike the Karanavars, the younger generation is not interested in using the ancestral property for cultivation or otherwise. Even if there is an interest, it is seen as a problem since there is no right to or facility available to them. The young people have the right to have food from their ancestral home. Since eating is not considered as an act which makes the homestead thrive, there is no increase in income proportionate to the cost. Even though they belong to the family, they are not usually given the opportunity to work. In this situation, though they do not perform any of their duties, they use all the benefits they rightfully deserve. When duty and rights are mutually exclusive, it is a miscarriage of justice where one enjoys only the rights without caring for the duty.

According to Mr. Parameswaran Pillai, the joint family arrangement should be abandoned and the property should be divided in such a way as to give equal rights to the people for their employment and sustenance. In this proposition, he logically refutes the arguments of the opponents of his suggestion.

For Nairs, who are mainly engaged in agricultural work, it is beneficial for them to have family property together while they are engaged in agriculture. They argue that if the resources are divided, the cost of cultivation will increase and therefore, the income will decrease. Since all the agricultural lands of a family are not contiguous, and because such lands lying in plots now are being managed by separate tenants instead of being cultivated by the young people of the family, it can be said, as a rebuttal, that the compulsion to manage the farms collectively is not sustainable. Apart from the fact that if the property is partitioned, the lands, which are now occupied by alien tenants, will be owned by the younger generation and can be cultivated by them. There is no doubt that there will be any loss beyond what is being lost today. Young people who are not interested in agriculture can sell their part of the property and enter into other professions like businesses. However, because they have not received enough education to acquire special knowledge in all these professions, there is a chance that they would face a lot of difficulties. This one shortcoming is the reason why those who are now unemployed are not qualified to enter any other profession.

It is essential for the survival of the Nair community that the leaders of the community should think about these matters and implement solutions to address the shortcomings indicated by Mr. Parameswaran Pillai.
