It has come to our notice that 'some refined persons' are writing editorials filled with barbed remarks and innuendoes deriding Malayalam newspapers. We are aggrieved at the prospect of this tendency which is spreading like an epidemic. They are lamenting that some papers publish insulting editorials. This is true, indeed. It is, of course, necessary for them to speak up about the contemptuous voice of the scornful articles published in papers which they themselves hold in high esteem. But what worries us is the fact that these people do not realise the blunder of wearing an anklet around the wrist and a bangle around the ankle on the assumption, perhaps, that since both are ornaments, it doesn't matter which part of the body they are worn on. Casting aspersions against papers is understandable, if the occasion demands so. People speaking about the sun or the moon are bound to mention the dark spots on those heavenly bodies. Those who worry about the insulting articles in certain papers are, in fact, demanding treatment for the dark spots on the moon. What else shall we say?

A knowledgeable lady by the name of Madam Brada has published an article calling for important reforms in regard to the current practice of English weddings. The wise woman says that marriages on the basis of love alone lead to many hardships, chief among them being poverty. The welfare of the society is at stake since the bride and the groom hasten to get united in their bond of love in utter disregard of their immediate surroundings. Not only that, duties and obligations expected of responsible persons too are no longer upheld. Words used to express love and respect for each other have become words of courtesy incapable of generating true mutual love. Children, from early childhood itself, do not put up with restraints imposed on them by others. Increasing disobedience on their part ultimately makes them ill-mannered brats. It is obedience and unity that are primarily required for the well-being of families. A family will be in jeopardy without them. This is the crux of the advice given by this wise woman.

A legend about the festival of Onam as provided by a correspondent from Ottappalam in an article published in Madras Standard is as follows:

Kerala was once controlled by a class of rulers known as Perumals. One of the Perumals thought about converting to Islam. As this desire grew stronger, he forced the people under his rule to convert to Islam. The Brahmins of Kerala were enraged over this. They assembled at Thrikkakkara temple and prayed to the lord for a change in the Perumal’s heart. On the day of the festival of Thiruvonam, Hindu and Muslim scholars congregated for a debate over the merits of their respective religions. In the end, the merits of Hinduism were accepted as superior. It is to commemorate this event that the festival of Onam is celebrated.

“Uproot selfishness, utter no harsh words to anyone, stay as constant and strong as steel with a loving heart.” This is how Bombay Governor Sir George Clarke advised his audience during a speech at Pune.
