The telegraphic news received today from Madras regarding the verdict in the case of sedition involving Yediraj Surendranath Arya has been published elsewhere in the paper. The trial in the case based on a police report against a man called Yediraj Surendranath Arya has been going on for some time. It was alleged that he made seditious speeches on March 9, May 3 and June 3 of 1908 in Madras. It was Mr Miller, Criminal Sessions Judge at Madras High Court, who tried Yediraj and passed judgement in the case. The trial in the case had begun at 11 am on August 13 and ended at 5 pm on the same day after the arguments of the defence.

It was stated earlier that the case originated from some speeches. In these speeches, Yediraj is reported to have said, “It was because Ravana ignored the advice of Mandodari that he met with his tragic end. If the 33 crore people of India spit in unison, the spittle thus produced will become an ocean capable of drowning the foreigners. Sivaji, Akbar, Guru Gobind, etc. were great men worthy of praise. When (text missing) is punished to celebrate the release of B. C. Pal from jail in the backdrop of a musical concert, the news of the event happens to reach even the illiterate people living in remote villages; they will even view it with disdain. By and large, people are not interested in getting to the bottom of things. Provocative action, however short-lived it may be, creates an impact on their minds and they mistake it for real government action. When prohibitory orders are in force, people may not rise in revolt or no revolt or agitation may occur at all for some time. But this should not be construed to mean that the situation is peaceful. Prohibitory orders can give rise to something unpalatable which may not be so evident for the time being. Judging the inside by what one observes on the outside may not always be free from errors. When we exert pressure on an object, the object might appear to be depressed for some time; it might even appear that it has been crushed, broken or even pulverised. But what happens to the heat generated as a result of applying pressure on it? And what happens to the energy thus produced? Extraneous action on our part may have been withdrawn owing to the ban order clamped on us. But the real outcome is not that. It is these prohibitory orders that make all people conscious of the affairs of their countries. It is through restrictive measures that the people open their eyes to see the truth of the country they live in. It is ban orders that help them recognise one another. And again, it is prohibitory orders that enable them to tell the friend from the foe (text missing).”
