Doubts raised by Mooloor Panikkar were answered. On the 10th, Thalavoor Thundil Nanu Pillai and Kani Padmanabhan Vaidyan*, along with three or four others, came in the morning. They came for an evaluation of Vaidyan’s Sabha Pravesam Attakkatha (text on Kathakali). The Attakkatha was scrutinised from the beginning. No other work was undertaken. It was heard reported that K. Ramakrishna Pillai, the editor of Svadesabhimani, and his printing press were taken into custody by two or three police inspectors as ordered by the Dewan. It was also reported that the editor’s residence was sealed.

On the 11th: Yesterday, at 12 midnight, K. Ramakrishna Pillai was taken from the police station amid tight security in a vehicle. It was heard reported today that he had been exiled beyond the Thovala Fort. The reason for the banishment is that he wrote a seditious article in the paper. This has triggered widespread protests and commotion in the city.

(It was the licentious behaviour of the then Dewan, Rajagopalachari, in the midst of women who had gathered in the mansion on Southern Street that the undaunted Ramakrishna Pillai had criticised in the paper. His criticism ran somewhat like this: “...if it had been King Ayilyam Thirunal, this minister womaniser, who showed off among the womenfolk wearing a thin garment, would have been banished from the land after being punished fiercely with a whip...” How true! It was in this sentence that the clever Dewan saw “sedition.” Such things happened then! The Publisher.)

On the 12th: I read issue no.106, Vol. 6 of Svadesabhimani today. It is dated for the seventh Kanni (Malayalam month). It may be reasonably concluded that this newspaper which was available three days every week has stopped publication with this issue. It was when the printing of Monday’s paper (on the 10th) had progressed considerably that the arrest was made. A gazette notification issued in this regard stated that it was on account of him publishing articles capable of corrupting people’s devotion to the monarchy that the editor was exiled. It further stated that he should not enter this land until such time as the king, out of his large heartedness, permits him to do so. The printing press and other paraphernalia have also been confiscated by the government.

*Vaidyan in Malayalam means a physician who practises Ayurveda.
